If you’re going to buy one piece of padel kit properly, make it your shoes. The court is sand-filled artificial turf, and the game is made up of sudden stops, side steps and changes of direction. The wrong sole slips, and the wrong shoe won’t support your foot.

Which sole is right for padel?

The most common is the herringbone sole, called espiga in Spanish. Its zigzag pattern grips the sandy turf but still lets your foot slide in a controlled way when you need it to.

  • A herringbone pattern works on most indoor and outdoor courts.
  • The sole of a tennis shoe made for omni or clay courts is similar and works too.
  • A smooth sports-hall sole slips on sand.
  • A running shoe sole is made for moving forwards and doesn’t support lateral movement.

How is a padel shoe different from a running shoe?

Padel shoe Running shoe
Movement side steps, stopping, changes of direction forward motion
Support strong lateral and heel support mainly cushioning
Sole lower and stable, herringbone pattern higher and softer, running tread
Toe area reinforced, because the toe drags along the ground light

How do you choose the right size?

  • Try shoes on in the afternoon, when your feet have swollen a little over the day.
  • Wear the same socks you play in.
  • Your heel shouldn’t move. Leave a little room in front of your toes so they don’t hit the end of the shoe when you stop sharply.
  • Do a few side steps and sudden stops in the shop. Your foot shouldn’t slide around inside the shoe.

How long do padel shoes last?

It depends on how often you play. Sand wears soles down quickly. Replace your shoes when the herringbone pattern is worn and your feet start to slip, or when the lateral support has weakened.

Do you need different shoes for indoor and outdoor courts?

No, the same shoe works for both. Indoor centres often ask you to change into clean shoes, so no dirt gets onto the court. On a wet outdoor court, a sole with good grip is especially important.

Can you wear tennis shoes for padel?

Yes, especially tennis shoes made for omni or clay courts, because their soles are similar. Hard-court tennis shoes work too, but they slip more on sand.

Do good shoes help prevent injuries?

They help. Calf and ankle injuries are common in padel, and a shoe with good grip and support reduces slipping and sudden twisting. Warming up, strength training and increasing your load gradually matter just as much, though. See our warm-up guide and guide to sports injuries.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear running shoes for my first game?

Yes, but move carefully. If you keep playing, buy padel or tennis shoes.

Can I wear padel shoes in the gym?

Yes, but don’t wear them on the street. Asphalt wears down the sole, and indoor centres need clean shoes.
